The rugged, mountainous Peljesac Peninsula (upper left) extends 43 miles (69 km) northwest into the Adriatic Sea in this southwest-looking view. A vacation resort area, fruits are grown in some valleys, and marble is quarried on the peninsula.

At the top center of the image is the eastern third of the island of Korcula.

The long narrow eastern portion of the island of Hvar is visible in the upper right of the image. The Dinaric Alps, a rugged mountain range, separates the narrow Dalmatian Coast from the hilly interior (bottom portion) of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The mouth of the Neretva River is discernible near the left center edge of the image. The Neretva River is 135 miles (217 km) long and navigable for small vessels. The Dalmatian Coast, because of its warm, dry, moderate climate, is a favorite vacation resort area.

Travel and visa requirements for U.S. Citizens:

A passport is required for travel to Croatia.

A visa is not required for U.S. passport holders for tourist or business trips of fewer than 90 days within a six- month period. More at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1095.html.

You might want to check the http://www.usembassy.hr/acs/travel_warnings.htm page for an up to date information.

Currency/Budgeting/Stay connected:

Croatian currency is Kuna http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croatian_kuna.

Up to date exchange rate you can get at http://www.pbz.hr/default.asp?ru=174.

Have in mind Croatia is very expensive country therefore leave a lot of room in your trip budget.

International daily newspaper are about $4, magazines up to $15.

A can or a small bottle of soda, one cup of ice-cream, a cup of coffee or tea, a glass of beer are $1-2. A dinner for four would cost you about $100. Bread is about $1 for 1/2kg, milk is about $3 for liter, eggs pack of 10 about $3, smoked bacon/pancetta is about $20kg, various salami about $10kg, cheese may vary from $10 to $20 per kg. Fruits and vegetables are basically about the same price in The United States.

Warning/Suggestion: if you are planning to prepare your meals you self (all of apartments have kitchen and if you rent a room the kitchen use is in package) go to shop for food in Orebic. The food stores in Trpanj are applying legal island tax to the prices so almost everything is les expensive in Orebic.

Transportation: A bus fare from Zagreb to Ploce is about $45 per person + ferry fare about $5 per person + the car.

Via Mail: To send a post card via air mail will cost you about $2. It takes about two weeks for mail send out from Trpanj to reach recipient in the United States.

Via phone: If you don't bring your cell phone with you I suggest don't buy any of prepaid cell phone services in Croatia since they are very, very expensive. It will cost you about $100 for the phone. If you bring your cell phone and it is unlocked and has a SIM card then you can purchase a prepaid calling plans for about $40 (SIM card and about 20 minutes of calling within Croatia, maybe about 5 minutes if you call back home). If you need to call abroad use the public phones. A calling card can be purchased at every newspaper stand or post office or you can make a call right from the post office which has the lowest calling rates. Internet and email!? forget it while in Trpanj and give your self a break. There is no public high speed Internet or hot spot access in Trpanj nor Internet cafés, the closest one is in Orebic.

How to get there:

Trpanj is remote, some 250 miles or 6 hours trip from Zagreb (capitol of Croatia) + about 45 minutes ferry trip from Ploce to Trpanj.

Your flight destination should be Zagreb, Croatia (International Airport Code ZAG).

From many of my trips to Croatia I learned that the best is to take any of overnight flights from the US East Coast to Europe (like AlItalia from Boston to Milan Italy, or Air France from Montreal to Paris France) and then from there to Zagreb. Most of those red eye flights will bring you in Zagreb early in the morning.

From Zagreb you would have to rent a car (all major internationals rent-a-car companies represented and reservations are available online) or take the bus to Ploce. If you decide to take the bus there is a shuttle from the airport to the Bus Station.

The Bus Station home and schedule pages in English are at akz.hr and akz.hr/EN.

In order to search the schedules you will have to enter into the To: field PLOČE (probably your computer keyboard doesn't support Croatian alphabet and I suggest copy PLOČE from here and paste into the field). Or and it would be better if you search on DUBROVNIK (key in Caps) which will bring more departures where every one fare makes stop in Ploce.

The next you need is to check the ferry schedule page in English at jadrolinija.hr/default.aspx?dpid=1304.

It is about 6 hours trip and you should get there right about to catch the ferry. If all goes as planned you should be in Trpanj the same day early evening. The bus or car trip is nice opportunity to see Croatia's country side.

Since your arrival destination is Zagreb I suggest you spend a day there. There is a lot to see in Zagreb. Here are some links to learn more about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zagreb and http://wikitravel.org/en/Zagreb. Then you can take the overnight bus to Ploce. This will bring you to Ploce just in time to  catch the ferry at 8:20 am and get to Trpanj in about 45 minutes.

For those of you arriving to Trpanj on the sailing or motor boats, yes Trpanj has a full marina capabilities and services. All about maritime regulation can be found at the Croatia's Ministry of the Sea, Tourism, Transport and Development website http://www.mmtpr.hr/default.asp?id=777 (in English).

In Trpanj:

Dinning: I suggest to eat at either Konoba Trpanj or Konoba Dubrovnik offering local and international cuisine and daily fresh fish, which over there can be either of your major meals or snack a snack in-between major meals. Both place are run by a very good friends of mine. They will host you them self and if your choice was induced by this page please give them my best regards. I have designed their websites and the links are Konoba Trpanj and Konoba Dubrovnik. Both places are just a walk away from the ferry port. There are also several other cafés and restaurants near by. In addition to the two above I would recommend Aurora Restaurant located on the right from the ferry port.

(Konoba is adopted into Croatian from Latin noun konoba. The closest English translation would be taverna from Modern Greek taberna, probably from Late Greek, drinking establishment, from Latin, hut, shop, a café in Greece, a cellar or restaurant in Croatia.)

Cupons:

Lodging: Well I started with food believing you have your accommodations and place to stay reserved in advance. If you don't I recommend to check if there are vacancies via my trpanjdirect.com lodging network. The network of affiliated is offering accommodation resources in apartments and rooms a year-round. All facilities are under my supervision and monitoring in order to provide continuous quality of services offered. Check my trpanjcouch.com to find out about our hosts offering free couch to the visitors of age 21 or less.

Getting around in Trpanj and Peljesac: If you are planning to stay in Trpanj and not to travel around you don't need any kind of vehicle to get around in Trpanj. All you need is in the walking distance. If you are planning to travel around there are several choices: for a short trips you can rent a bicycle or scooter. For more distant trips you can rent a car. There are several rental places. To rent a scooter it will run you about $60 a day, or $120 for a car (local insurance and tax included). All relevant maps are available at the Tourism Office.

Activities:

You can swim, tan, read a book (bring some with you Trpanj doesn't have a book store), enjoy the town and its architecture, walk the trails, woods and beaches or visit the valley of grapes and small gardens, the St. Roko's Church on the hill. There is a lot of history in Trpanj.

There are the towns of Dingac and Postup where you can taste the best of Croatian vino (vine) or Prosciutto. There are also other villages in inner Peljesac blessed with same offerings.

Other nearby attractions/places to visit: Orebic-Korcula Canal windsurfing, NP Mljet, Town of Ston, Dubrovnik and Korcula Island. All local bus lines and ferry or passenger boat connections schedules are available at the Tourism office.

Also there are two local yachts operators offering local picnic cruse and sight seeing.

For more adventurous there are two more destinations I recommend to visit:

- Medjugorje, better known by appearance of Blessed Virgin Mary is a four hours away. Here are some links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medjugorje, http://www.medjugorje.org/, http://www.medjugorje.net/

- Mostar, better known as the Old Bridge Town. All info is at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mostar

You would have to take the ferry to Ploce and then the bus to Medjugorje or Mostar. The best way to check on the bus schedules is to send an email massage at http://www.ak-ploce.hr/html/kontakti.asp (the page is in Croatian, no English yet but you will recognize where to enter your email address. Then in the field named "svrha kontakta" enter the subject and in the field named "opis" enter your inquiry.

Have in mind both towns are in Bosnia and Herzegovina therefore don't forget your passport.

Supplies and other services:

Food, beverage and other supply stores, a newspaper stand, the bank and ATM, post office, a gas station, local ambulance and pharmacy are right downtown.

The town receives daily fresh products including fruits and vegetables supplied by farmers from the Neretva River.

If you are interested in any kind of hardware supplies forget it. There is nothing like in Trpanj. The closest town to shop for hardware is Orebic.

Ah, vino (vine) - the best Croatian vine like Dingac and Postup can be purchased at the food stores (liquor too) at 15 and up Euros for a 750mml bottle. I recommend to buy a local vine offered at several places (there is one next to the Post Office) at about 2-3 Euros for 1 liter. The vine comes from the grape Mali Plavac and vineyards in nearby villages of Vrucica, Kuna and Oskorusno.

If you trust to my taste in vine (I think I know a bit about since my family is from Dalmatia) then call a friend of mine Mr. Mladen Luksic at 091 345 9266. Mladen is a vine maker and owner of one of the biggest vineyards in Peljesac and he will deliver vine to your door (5 liter bottle is about $14).

The Best of Trpanj:

A long sunny days and beaches you can tan from the sunrise to the sunset over the Island of Hvar.

A walkway about 5km long stretching from the downtown along the sea all the way to the uptown.

A crystal clear, clean and pollution free Sea and beautiful beaches are literary a walk away.
